The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Harry Ellis (39289988), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 347th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 15 December 1944. On that date, the company with which Private Ellis was advancing near Obergailbach, Germany, was pinned down by heavy enemy machine-gun fire. Completely disregarding his own safety, this courageous soldier, armed with an automatic rifle, voluntarily advanced alone across a hundred yards of ground exposed to enemy fire and entered a hedgerow where he destroyed two machine-guns and captured four prisoners. Private First Class Ellis' conspicuous heroism, determination, and supreme devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 87th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
