Carl R. Force, Technical Sergeant, (then Staff Sergeant), Headquarters Company Third Battalion, 180th Infantry, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services, from 27 July 1943 to 7 January 1944. When his battalion was faced with the urgent need for animal transportation in Sicily, Staff Sergeant Force, on his own initiative, rounded up stray animals in the vicinity, and improvising pack equipment he led a train of supplies over a circuitous mountain route to units of his battalion. During the difficult winter fighting in the mountains around Venafro, Italy, again he discharged with skill and efficiency the assignment of training and organizing personnel for supply trains in the regiment. The knowledge, ability and leadership which Technical Sergeant Force demonstrated were instrumental in the successful delivery of supplies to the troops during this bitter fighting. His courage and resourcefulness were of invaluable service to his organization, and were worthy of the highest praise.
