Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Captain
Unit:
B Company, 1st Battalion, The Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade, 1st Canadian Infantry Division, Canadian Army
Recommendation:
On 9 December 1943, during hard fighting by the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, establishing their sector of the bridgehead in the area north of the Moro River (Italy) Map Reference 3412, an enemy strongpoint was located on "B" Company front. Captain Hammond, Company Commander, and Company Sergeant-Major Yearwood armed with Thompson Sub-Machine Guns and supported by the fire of a section, rushed this strong point in spite of the heavy fire on all sides; this bold action completely surprised the enemy. Fourteen of the enemy were casualties and eighteen taken prisoner, the position falling to our troops. This daring action did much to lower enemy morale and cause confusion in enemy tanks.
The courage and dash displayed by Captain Hammond was an inspiration to those under his command and resulted in the strengthening of the bridgehead over the Moro.
