Biography

George Henry Ford Goodwin Gregory, born in Govan, Glasgow, on June 24, 1917, was one of seven children. A printer before the war, he joined the RAF early on, completing a full tour as a gunner in 44 Squadron by late 1942 and earning the DFM.

After commissioning at a training unit, he returned to operations in March 1943 and was posted to 617 Squadron for the Dams Raid preparations.

He served as the front gunner on board AJ-M "Mother" during the Dambuster raid. The airplane, a Lancaster, was flown by John Hopgood.

The shot up Lancaster couldn't gain altitude after the second engine was hit and crashed with the loss of John Hopgood, Ken Earnshaw, Charles Brennan and John Minchin.
