He has distinguished himself in connection with hostile action in the first years of the war by courageous and tactful acts and has served the interests of Our Kingdom by helping escaped French prisoners of war and members of Allied aircrews to cross the eastern border into Brabant and across the southern border. He personally participated in the succesful raid on the Koepel in Arnhem. On the way back, near Zutphen he sustained a bullet wound in his leg during an exchange of fire. He played a vital part in acts of sabotage against rail- and waterways to Germany in September 1944.
