"For heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial fligth as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Marine Fighter Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the Ryukyu Islands Area, from 7 to 28 May 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Captain Hobbs participated in hazardous combat air patrols and intercepted hostile aircraft attempting to attack friendly installations, thereby contributing materially to the success of his squadron. A skilled leader and airman, Captain Hobbs, by his courageous devotion to duty in the face of grave dangers, upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."

"For meritorious achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane and a Division Leader in Marine Fighter Squadron THREE HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO during operations against enemy Japanese forces in the vicinity of Okinawa Shima, Nansei Shoto, from 29 April to 6 May 1945. Completing his fifteenth mission during this period, Captain Hobbs led his Division in carrying out hazardous combat air patrols and, on 6 May, braved intense hostile antiaircraft fire to press home a daring attack against Japanese installations which were hindering the advance of friendly ground troops. By his skill as a leader and airman and his courageous devotion to duty, Captain Hobbs destroyed and damaged many enemy defensive positions, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
