"Sgt Melling has served for seven years with the 7th Hussar.

At the outbreak of war he was recalled to the Colours and posted to the 17th/21st Lancers. He saw action service in Norway.

Since the landing in North Africa he has served with distinction in every battle in which the Regiment has taken part. On April 9th, 1943, at Fondouk, Sgt Melling was commanding a two tank troop on the right of the gap, he was ordered forward to cover the withdrawal of the remaining five tanks of the Squadron. He went forward and when the other tank of this troop was knocked out, he silenced the gun and engaged the machine guns and snipers who were picking off the dismounted tank crews.

When ordered himself to withdraw, he again advanced to collect another dismounted crew and then circled round picking up other men as he went.

He finally returned with 23 men on his tank. As soon as he had brought them to safety he unhesitatingly returned to the battle, attaching himself to "A" Squadron as there was nothing left of his own squadron.

The initiative and bravery of this NCO saved many mens' lives and was an inspiration to the remainder of his squadron. I consider his action should receive an award."
