Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Major
Unit:
Headquarters, 38th (Irish) Infantry Brigade, 78th Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
December 13th, 1945
"In April 1945 during the advance from the River Senio to AUSTRIA Major Spens was Brigade Major. Untiring in his work he has shown a devotion to duty and fixedness of purpose far in excess of that which normal duty expects. For three consecutive days and nights Major Spens got little or no sleep in his determination that no small detail, for the efficiency of the Brigade, was overlooked. Never did any consideration of sparing himself arise. He has been an example and inspiration to all who have seen him.

Whenever time could be spared Major Spens used to go forward to the leading companies at considerable personal risk, to ensure that everything possible was provided for them.

Major Spens has, during the Italian campaign, commanded a rifle company in action for a year until he was wounded and been a Brigade Major for eight months.

Major Spens by his excellent grasp of the situation, his determination, thoroughness, enthusiasm and industry has contributed largely to the efficiency of the Brigade."
Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)
