Whilst on De Panne - Nieuport Road at St.Idesbalde, on 23rd June 1945 my Lance-Corporal Nicholson tried to save life of a soldier who was injured in minefield blast. No volunteers came forward so he went over a high wall then went over alone some 30 yards into the minefield to try to attend to the soldier. Sadly he was unable to drag him to the wall alone, so he retraced his steps, and now armed with a stretcher and with the help of an aged Belgian civilian, they managed to get him out. However, by this time the man was dead. This was witnessed by many soldiers who by this time were looking over the wall urging them on. Nicholson received his medal in the post shortly after the war.
British Empire Medal (BEM & EGM)
