"On the 10 Jun 44 this officer was commanding a tp in the centre of the regt's adavance on the village of CELLENO when the tps on his flanks were held up by accurate A tk fire and the close-range fire of rockets and sticky bombs. Lt SMYTH although wounded, pushed forward into the middle of the enemy positions fighting off the close-range attacks with his TSMG and grenadesand so directing his gunner that he knocked out four A tk guns and thus broke his waya through the centre of the enemy position. Throughout this engagement he showed a total disregard for his personal safety."
