Hermann Heinrich Pennings lived in Rotterdam at the Gaesbeekstraat 37b. He was married with Agnes Gertrud Wormans (November 23rd, 1907, Kevelaer, Germany).
He served as guard with the German Wehrmacht and was a member of the SS and the Sicherheitspolizei. Beceause he served with the Waffen-SS he had lost his Dutch nationality. On February 19th, 1945 he was on his way to work when he was passed by two cyclists at the Coolsingel in Rotterdam. When they passed him they shot him in the head. Pennings survived the attack but was at first presumed to be dead. as a reprisal, the next morning Ferbuary 20th, 1945, the Germans shot 10 men near the place Pennings was shot. The bodies remained at the sight for a whole day.
Pennings however survived and left for Germany after he recovered. Here he worked as a prison guard in a military prison in Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel. He committed suicide in the night of May 4th/5th, 1945.
