    Biography

Lived in Baflo. Son of Jacob Gootjes (minister) and Maria Louisa Veldman. Unmarried. Clerk. Reformed Protestant. Member of the resistance under the alias Koos. At the municipal office, he helped people in hiding find addresses of people who could provide them with accommodation. Together with his brother Pieter, Jaap, as he was known, was involved in the raid on the distribution office in Langweer on 4 June 1943. It was the first raid of its kind in the Netherlands. The brothers also took part in raids on ration offices in Ferwert, Ten Boer, Baflo, Kerkenveld and Steenwijksmoer near Coevorden. Due to the betrayal of the furniture dealer Miske, the SD raided the farm of Klaas Bos (8 January 1904 Middelstum) on 11 February 1944, where the brothers were in hiding. They fled into the countryside, but during the firefight with the Germans, both were shot dead at around half past one in the afternoon. Farmer Bos was wounded, severely beaten and died the next day in a hospital in Groningen as a result of his injuries and the abuse. A street in Baflo is named after the Gootjes brothers. Jacob Gootjes was cremated at the Driehuis-Westerveld crematorium on the orders of the Germans.
