    Biography

Lived in Middelstum. Son of Jacob Gootjes ( “vicar”) and Maria Louisa Veldman. Unmarried. Student of law. Reformed Protestant. No sooner had the first days of the war in May 1940 passed than he began to study National Socialism intensively. That is why he also joined the armed resistance of the KP-Groningen under the alias Daan. Together with his brother Jacob Pieter, he was involved in the raid on the distribution office in Langweer on 4 June 1943.

Due to the betrayal of the furniture dealer Miske, on 11 February 1944, the SD raided the farm of Klaas Bos (8 January 1904 Middelstum), where the brothers were in hiding. They fled into the countryside, but during the firefight with the Germans, both were shot dead at around half past one in the afternoon. Farmer Bos was wounded, severely beaten and died the next day in a hospital in Groningen as a result of his injuries and the beating. A street in Baflo is named after the Gootjes brothers.

Pieter Gootjes was cremated at the Driehuis-Westerveld crematorium on the orders of the Germans.
