    Biography

Jan de Kroon lived in Oudemirdum. He was born on July 24th, 1925, to Uilke de Kroon and Antje de Jong. He was an unmarried cattle farmer. He completed his education at the National Secondary Agricultural School in Sneek. On April 18th, 1945, Jan and three friends were ordered by a member of the Dutch Interior Forces between Lemmer and Oosterzee, near Follega, to cycle in single file instead of in single file. De Kroon hesitated or perhaps refused to comply. The BS member then fired a shot that struck Jan in the abdomen. He was transported by ambulance to a Canadian field hospital in Beilen. However, he succumbed to internal bleeding en route. The military authorities failed to register the victim's identity. Therefore, he was initially buried in Beilen as an unknown individual. After five weeks of searching, De Kroon's father discovered his missing son's grave. After exhuming it, he recognized his son.
