    Biography

Arie de Waal lived in Huizen. He was born on July 4th, 1917, in Wijk en Aalburg, the son of Huibert Jan de Waal and Jenneke Hoeflaken. He worked as a sergeant in the military police and was a member of the resistance movement belonging to the L.O.-Huizen, the KP (Royal Dutch People's Party), and the Dutch Interior Forces. Very soon after the capitulation of the Dutch army in May 1940, De Waal began working illegally. For example, he warned people about house searches and raids, which, as a police officer, he had known about in advance. Later, he was involved in the armed resistance. After being betrayed by a so-called good German, he was arrested by the GrĂ¼ne Polizei on September 27th, 1944, along with Klaas Snel (May 28th, 1895, Amsterdam) and Jakob Brands (March 11th, 1915, Huizen). They were tasked with saving the PHOHI (Philips Broadcasting Holland Indies) transmitter in Huizen. The Germans intended to blow it up. The three resistance fighters were shot at 9 a.m. the morning after their arrest, facing the transmitter.
