    Biography

Lived in Emmen, Julianastraat 37. Son of servant/labourer Roelof de Lange (19 August 1848 Noordbarge, municipality of Emmen - 4 April 1908 Emmen) and shopkeeper Roelfien Warring (14 January 1858 Emmen - 11 October 1938 Emmen). Married on 12 June 1923 to maid Annechien Pol (4 September 1902 Oranjedorp, municipality of Emmen - 15 July 1972).

Carpenter/sexton at the Reformed Chapel in Emmen/assistant caretaker. Dutch Reformed. As a carpenter, De Lange had been involved in the construction of the Dutch Reformed Deaconess House in Emmen. Later, he was employed there as an assistant caretaker.

De Lange was not affiliated with the resistance, but he did give permission for items such as weapons, uniforms and radios to be hidden in the Chapel and also helped to store them. Together with his son, he was arrested by the Landwacht during the night of 12 to 13 January 1945 and taken to a public primary school. His son was released in the morning.

Father De Lange, however, ended up in the military police barracks on Boslaan in Emmen. The next day, he was transported to the SD office in Assen and imprisoned in the Assen Detention Centre. He was executed in retaliation for the attack on SS Befehlshaber Hanns Albin Rauter on the night of 6 to 7 March 1945 at Woeste Hoeve.

On 8 March 1945, his family had to leave their home within fifteen minutes, leaving all their belongings behind. Only the grandmother who lived with them was allowed to take her belongings with her. To keep neighbours who wanted to help at a distance, the Germans fired shots into the air.

The family was first taken in by neighbours and relatives. Later, they were allowed to move into a house behind the station, where they lived until the liberation of Emmen.

In Emmen, H. de Langestraat was renamed after De Lange. His name is engraved on the glass memorial plaque at the Woeste Hoeve monument.

Initially buried in a mass grave at Heidehof Cemetery in Ugchelen (Apeldoorn). Reburied on 18 June 1945 at the Oude Algemene Begraafplaats in Emmen, block VII, row E, grave number 15.
