    Biography

Isaac Jacovici lived at Herengracht 238 in Amnsterdam. He was a whole saler and unmarried.
On May 17, 1943 there were only eight prisoners in Camp Amersfoort. In the morning, 77 Jewish males arrived in the camp from Vught. Later that day, Jacovici (prisoner 192) and 572 other Jews arrived in Amersfoort from Camp Westerbork. (The arrival of both groups marked the second phase of Camp Amersfoort. The PDA was renamed Erweiterte Poliziegefängnis.
They claimed to have dual nationalities, exonerating them from deportation to Poland. During the investigation into their nationality they stayed in Amersfoort. According to Frijtag Drabbe Künzel, the reason was this would free up space for Jews who could be deported to the extermination camps in Poland right away. (Frijtag Drabbe Künzel discovered that most claimed to have the British nationality. Over 50 of them were, in their own words, citizens of Paraguay. It struck the historian that many of them were in possession of papers claiming they were Hungarin as well).
Obviously, the Germans did not need much time to investigate as the group left again for Westerbork on June 11. Amsterdammer Jacovici was no longer among them. According to the Diensttagebuch of the Blochführer von Dienst, prisoner 193 — this should have been 192 — had been shot by two guards on May 1943 at 03:25 a.m. as he was near the barbed wire fence and suspected of wanting to escape. (According the Diensttagebuch he was 'fluchtverdächtig, liable to escape). Early March 1949, his death certificate was recorded in the municipal records of Leusden by order of the Regional Court Utrecht of January 26, 1949.
Jacovici's remains were cremated in Vught.
