    Biography

Lived in Ashgrove, Queensland (Australia). Son of Patrick Joseph Ryan (19 December 1888 Mount Morgan, Queensland – died 1958 Longreach, Queensland and Mary Elizabeth Collins (3 April 1890 Mount Morgan). Sergeant 42 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force with the army number 78439. Ryan (29) was executed at the Japanese execution ground in Antjol. Two fellow crew members, John Irwin Vetter and James Sydney Brown (both 24), also suffered the same fate that day. On 14 October 1944, the Catalina in which they were flying during the second mission to Makassar (South Celebes) to lay mines was hit by enemy fire. Six members of the crew were killed. Ryan's name appears on panel 103 of the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Campbell/Canberra. The mother's given names are taken from a family site; the Commonwealth War Graves Commission refers to it as Mary Ellen. See also Brown, James Sydney.
