"The ship, sailing alone, was torpedoed in darkness and severe damage was caused.
The vessel had to be abandoned and one lifeboat and some rafts got safely away. The lifeboat reached land after eleven days, but a search for the rafts, which was then organised, was not successful.
Able Seaman McMillan displayed courage and coolness throughout. During the boat voyage, his skill in handling the boat contributed materially to the 23 occupants being brought to safety."
