Recommendation:
"Major SCOTT-BOWDEN has commanded 17 Fd Coy since 10 Jun 44. During this time he has quite literally led his coy in every action. Wherever the fighting was hardest and whenever his coy were employed in a particulary dangerous task Major SCOTT-BOWDEN was there directing the work which hee had invariably recced himself either with the leading pl of inf or in front of them. His individual feats of gallantry are almost too numerous to record.
During the battle of VENRAIJ his coy were responsible for the gapping of the very extensive and dangerous schu minifields along the Molen Beek, Major SCOTT-BOWDEN carried out the recce with the leading ranks and when his coy came forward he continued to supervise their work troughout the critical 24 hrs in spite of the heavy fire and the treacherous A pers minefield.
During the attack on KERVENHEIM in Feb 45 he made a recce to a point within 1000yds of the village, a point which after a further 24 hrs of very heavy fighting was still in the hands of the enemy.
Finally at LINGEN on 4 Apr 45 his coy were building a C1 9 br over the DORTMUND-EMS Canal, a SP gun had direct observation on the site from close range and shelling on the site was very heavy. Major SCOTT_BOWDEN directed the operation standing on the br until finally he got wounded buth trough his superb example all ranks continued the work in spite of the shell fire until the task was complete.

This extremely gallant officer has always set a magnificent example of devotion to duty with complete disregard for his personal safety."

June 13th, 1964
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
Date of action or period covered by the citation: 20 Dec to Mar 64.
Recommendation:
"Lt-Col Scott-Bowden assumed his present appointment as GSO I United Kingdom Land Forces at the end of 1952. His work involves constant discussion and association with both the Ministry of Defence and the Home Office on matters of high policy. This has entailed a very detailed knowledge, not only of the functions of General Headquarters United Kingdom Land Forces post attack and of the corresponding Headquarters of the other two Services, but also of the organisation of the Central Government in War. Moreover, it has involved him in matters of the highest secrecy.

Throughout this period he has shown that he has mastered completely the intricacies of his job and possesses the necessary tact, drive and determination to see proposals through the highly satisfactory conclusion. In particular, he has been associated with a Working Party set up by a Government Sub-Committee to thrash out the military functions of Central Government in War. During its deliberations his background knowledge and guiding hand were of immense value to the other members of the Working Party. In fact, it soon became apparant that it was due almost entirely to his efforts that the final report met with such all round acclaim.

Further afield, Lt-Col Scott-Bowden has had to maintain the closest contact with Division/Districts throughout the country over matters affecting their war role. He has attended many of their planning meetings and been a tower of strength in steering proposals and lines of thought along the right channels.

All this entailed many long hours of very hard work and a dogged determination to get things done. As a result, United Kingdom Land Forces planning during the past 15 months has progressed out of all recognition and despite the enevitable set-backs of financial stringency he has reached an advanced stage. Lt-Col Scott-Bowden can take full credit for this. His work has been a source of the greatest inspiration to those who work under him."
Period:
After War Period (1945-now)
Rank:
Acting Major-General
Unit:
Late Royal Engineers
Awarded on:
January 1st, 1972
Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)
Date of action or period covered by the citation: Jun 70 - Jul 71
Recommendation:
"Brigadier Scott-Bowden was appointed to Northern Ireland to raize and command the Ulster Defence Regiment, a body of part time volunteers. In a single year, he has raised seven battalions which, for the majority of that time, have been assisting in internal security operations.

The inspiration, the enthusiasm, the sense of Service and professionalism of the new regiment have, in the first instance, begun with Brigadier Scott-Bowden. He has been tireless in this cause. Though they are scattered widely through 6 countries and in Belfast, none have lacked a visit for more than a few days. The dangers on inter-communal dissidence have been many: he has overcome them. Where weakness due to inexperience threatened he sensed it and at once supplied strength.

The work he has undertaken has been formidable. The regiment now makes a major contribution to operations and without it many more regular troops would be required. His achievement has been outstanding.
It deserves high recognition."
