Between 1940 and 1945, Henk Curière Sr. led a small communist resistance group in the Spaarndammerbuurt neighbourhood, which was mainly involved in distributing resistance newspapers (the illegal De Waarheid) and collecting money for people in hiding. He was awarded the Resistance Cross and the Golden Pin of the Municipality of Amsterdam.
