Awarded the Knight’s Cross for defusing a total of 1892 bombs in the city of Cologne. Among these were a couple of particularly dangerous assignments which included defusing one bomb that had landed in an oxygen plant and another in a gas tank that was full of fuel (thereby saving thousands of litres of valuable fuel).
