On the 23.07.1941 the 3. Infanterie-Division (mot) reached the Lowatj river along a broad front. During the early morning hours of this day Oberleutnant von Tippelskirch led a surprise attack against the bridge over this river at Lipno with his Batterie together with the 2./Pi.Btl. 3 (mot), the Kradsch.-Zug 8 and elements of the 10. & 14./I.R. 8 (mot). Though earthen bunkers protected the eastern side of the bridge, Tippelskirch and his men were nonetheless able to capture the structure intact and subsequently defend the newly won bridgehead against strong Soviet counterattacks.
