Captain Garratt immediately got his men out of the trucks and into positions of defence . A few minutes later fire was opened on the patrol from the rear.
Fire was now coming from three directions. the enemy being about fifty strong, and the stocks of ammunition carried by the troops were soon exhausted. Showing complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Garratt returned to the trucks which were in a very exposed position, collected the further reserves of ammunition, and by his prompt action, leadership and coolness under fire, saved his patrol from heavy losses."
