Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel
Unit:
1/4 King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, 146th Infantry Brigade, 49th (West Riding) Infantry Division, British Army
Awarded on:
January 24th, 1946
Citation:
"Lt Col Jenkins has commanded his Bn since 18 Feb 1945. Throughout this period he has maintained his Bn at the highest state of efficiency. During Feb and Mar his Bn was in close contact with the enemy and living in appalling conditions first in snow and then in floods, but due to his personality and leadership the moral of his troops remained as high as ever. It is to his credit that on his return to mobile conditions his Bn moved with great speed and efficiency when assisting to clear the enemy from the area South of Arnhem to which they had clung throughout the winter months. Finally in the last stages of the campaign his Bn was given the task of clearing the town of ARNHEM itself. This involved street fighting, much of it during the hours of darkness. Lt Col Jenkins displayed fine powers of leadership in executing this difficult task with the minimum delay.
Previous to his command of this Bn Col Jenkins commanded a Bn of the South Staff in Normandy and was concerned in the heavy fighting during the months of June and July 1944.
Throughout he has demonstrated his powers of leadership and ability to handle his Bn under the most trying conditions."
