Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Company Quartermaster-Sergeant
Unit:
184th Field Company R.E., GHQ Troops Engineers, Headquarters, Second Army, British Army
Awarded on:
February 1st, 1945
Awarded for:
Operation Overlord
Citation:
"C.Q.M.S. Saul has been cqms of 184 Field Company RE since December, 1942. While acting in this capacity he has seen the Coy converted firstly from a Special Tunneling Coy to a Field Coy, which was later given the special task of a Beach Field Coy in the Assault.
All this has involved considerable changes of G.1098 equipment and it is very largely due to the efforts and efficiency of CQMS Saul that the unit was properly and fully equipped to take part in Operation Overlord.
His task was made more difficult by changes in Comdrs which inevitably threw more responsibility on him, and by frequent changes of locations and sources of supply.
Within 24 hrs of the Coy landing in Normandy, practically the whole of the G.1098 equipment was destroyed by enemy action, but undeterred by this setback, CQMS Saul immediately set about the task of re-equipping the unit and it is to his credit and due to his untiring energy that the Coy is now once more in posession of its equipment. He has set a fine example of devotion to duty and efficiency."
