Biography

Rentje Ritzema was, together with his brother Martinus (former Mayor of Oldekerk, active in the Ordedienst, one of the Dutch resistance organisations against the Germans. On April 1st, 1945 the German Sicherheitsdienst entered the farm of Rentje at Leens where both Rentje and Martinus were at that moment. Rentje was shot by the Germans on the spot and Martinus was taken to the Huis van Bewaring (prison) in Groningen. He was executed at Bakkeveen on April 19th, 1945.
