Biography

Jan Joseph Buskens served as Sergeant with 2nd Company, Ist Batallion, 37th INfantry Reigment, Dutch Army. On May 10th, 1940 he was part of a watch detachment on the bridge over the Juliana Channel at Stein-Meers. Around 05.00 hrs a group of military dressed in Dutch uniforms crossed the bridge and was adressed by Jan Buskens. After a remark about their sloppy uniforms and non Dutch weapns he asked for the password after which the dresses up German soldiers grabbed their weapons and disarmed Buskens. He had to turn himself around after which he was shot in the back. Seriously wounded, Jan Joseph Buskens was later transported to the hospital in Sittard, where he died of his wounds on June 27th, 1940.
