"Captain Salwa leading his Squadron in the action on Merxplas (Merksplas) and Zondereigen / MR 400512-03717 / on 30th September 1944 broke through in enemy's rear and seized three crossings over the Mark River. The fighting for the crossings was extremely hard, thanks to the initiative , energy and exemplary leadership of Captain Salwa complete surprise was affected and large numbers of prisoners taken. Fighting in heavy wooded country, Captain Salwa gave proof of exceptional courage leading the advance personally under murderous mortar fire and wiping out many of the enemy nests of resistance. The magnificent example he set was the decisive factor in this battle as the seizing of the river crossings enabled the whole Battle Group to deploy for action and was instrumental in ensuring the success of the operation".
