This officer was Brigade Major of 1st Parachute Brigade which was dropped during the night 13/14th July 1943 to seize an important bridge South of Catania in Sicily. Only a small part of the force reached their destination and for a long time Major Hunter was the only Staff Officer at Brigade Headquarters, while the Brigade Commander was wounded. Owing to the shortage of men all personnel of Brigade Headquarters were used as fighting troops, in attack and defence. During 24 hours of hard fighting Major Hunter set a fine example of personal courage, determination and devotion to duty. While carrying out his duties he moved about regardless of very heavy fire and was an inspiration and fine example to all ranks."
