"At 0730 hrs on 6 June 1944 on the beaches in front of LA RIVIERE Major Clayton landed from the leading L.C.T. in th assault on the coast of FRANCE with his Company.
The Sappers he commanded had to land unsupported by any immediate covering fire except that given by the few accompanying "FLAIL"Churchill Tanks. The "DD" Tanks which were to support them had been prevented by weather from getting ashore to time. The Sapper obstacle romoval parties were met by fierce fire from enemy S.A.A. and 88 m.m. In face of his opposition Major CLAYTON by his example of entire disregard of danger so inspired his officers and men that in spite of heavy casualties they continued unconcerneily to demolish and tow away the obstacles, which have prevented a successful landing of the LCT's by the NAVY, as if an exercise until driven inland by the rising tide."
