Johannes “Jan” Freriks received the Resistance Memorial Cross for his work as an employee of the PTT, where he had established a secret network unknown to the occupying forces, which was used to pass on information to the resistance. During the First World War he was mobilized with the 5e Compagnie, Korps Pantserfortartillerie at Fortress Pannerden.
