The DFM was probably awarded for an action on 30 September 1939.
On that day five Fairey Battles of No. 150 Squadron - based at Ecury-sur-Coole- flew out to reconnoitre a particular position near Saarbrucken during which they were attacked by 15 Me109's.
Aircraftman First Class Murcar was the gunner on Battle K9283, flown by Squadron Leader W M L MacDonald. Two 109's were claimed by Murcar.

Murcar was lost when Hudson N7306 failed to return from patrol over Norway, 15 April 1940.
