    He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy by performing particularly courageous and tactful acts in the years 1942, 1943 and 1944 while transporting hundreds of escaped prisoners and aircrews from Lichtenvoorde to the southern part of the country from where they were guided across the Dutch-Belgian by other people. During these train rides he took great risks and in May 1944, he was forced into hiding by betrayal.
