The following newspaper excerpt describes why Wippermann received the Knight’s Cross…

"Oberleutnant Max Wippermann especially distinguished himself on the 06.08.1942 during the hard defensive fighting in the area Rzhev-Subzov. During a powerful Soviet tank attack, which aimed to roll up the Subzov bridgehead from the flank, he and his Kampfgruppe destroyed 14 heavy enemy tanks, a mortar and a field gun. He was badly wounded in these battles."
