"Under intense artillery fire 2nd Lieutenant Thomas Harold Broadbent Maufe, R.G.A., on his own initiative and unaided, repaired the telephone line between forward and rear positions, enabling his battery to open fire immediately. This officer also extinguished a fire in an advanced ammunition dump regardless of the risk presented by gas shells which he knew to be in the dump."
