The following wartime excerpt describes why Treeck received the Knight’s Cross…

"In the fighting at Crete Major Dr. Treeck’s Bataillon completed the difficult task of advancing over the pathless Ida Mountains to Stylos. Operating independently of his Regiment, he opened up the retreat road of the British in a bold and ruthless attack. Through his swift and independent decision, he thereby enabled the advance of friendly motorized forces and the subsequent relief of the paratroopers at Rethimnon."
