On 1 Mar 45 “C” Coy led by Maj Dye preceded a Bn night infiltration to HAUS WINKEL near KAPPELEN. The adv was wrought with difficulties, a very short time was available for briefing and the whereabouts of the enemy was not known. The adv passed through a large forest and the objective, a walled-in house and its surrounding buildings, was known to be occupied.

Maj Dye's leadership in this difficult operation was superb. With great accuracy he marked the route as he went fwd. He located Bosche posns on the near edge of the wood and in between them he successfully found a way through. With such skill and silence was this carried out that the whole Bn passed between these localities without incident, save the quiet snaffling of a prisoner. Passing through the woods the objective was dimly outlined. Moving fwd with this leading pl Maj Dye initiated a flanking movement against some enemy in the vicinity of the house. Surprise was complete and the party of five were captured. He then moved across to his other fwd pl and led them in an assault against a further party of Bosche in the garden. So sudden and determined was this manoevre that without loss this sec was accounted for. Moving quickly round his coy Maj Dye then supervised the consolidation of his coy which was then being subjected to hy arty fire. So quickly and thoroughly did he complete his consolidation that the enemy counterattack directed against him two hours after his arrival was received by a fully dug-in and prepared coy. This was broken up with several casualties to the enemy. Although suffering from extreme fatigue Maj Dye later that day led his coy fwd again through the forest to an outpost posn of the far side.

During this op one of his pls was attacked in the wood. Thanks however to this offr's quick appreciation and the speed with which he led his counter-attack force, this was quickly driven off and he took up his outpost posn. Here again so inspiring was his leadership that the morale of his tired men was kept at a very high level and further efforts by the Bosche to dislodge him were repelled with great determination. Throughout the period of three days and nights with scarcely any sleep this offr showed a standard of leadership, tirelessness and inspiration which infected his whole coy and without which a very difficult op could not have been so successfully accomplished.
