"For distinguishing himself by excellent service as C.I.C. officer and assistant evaluator of a destroyer during action against Japanese forces in Surigao Straits, Philippine Islands, on the night of October 24-25. Although his ship was illuminated by the enemy star shells and subjected to heavy enemy gun-fire, Ensign Begle directed the radar operations of the ship and furnished accurate tracking data on the movement of enemy ships, thereby contributing to the succesful execution of an attack which resulted in severe damage to the enemy fleet. For his courage, professional skill and conduct throughout he is commended and authorized to wear the commendation ribbon."
