On 23.12.1944 the Führer-Begleit-Brigade engaged a column of retreating American troops south of the Cierreux mill during a furious night battle, destroying a total of 23 American tanks. Feldwebel Scheunemann played a major role in this fight, personally destroying 5 tanks plus 2 hitched guns, and in doing so contributed to breaking the US resistance in this area. For his actions here he would receive the Knight’s Cross.
