The following press article excerpt describes why Obergefreiter Schaldach received his Knight’s Cross…

“… On the 29.07.1944, in the area around Voronezh, the enemy launched only weak and fruitless attacks, some of which were undone merely through the effects of concentrated artillery fire. During the course of our successful counterattacks against an advanced enemy battle group a total of 14 enemy tanks were destroyed. Of these 7 were destroyed by Obergefreiter Schaldach, gun commander in a Panzerjägerabteilung, despite strong enemy defense fire…”
