Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Obergefreiter (Corporal)
Unit:
Gruppenführer 3./Grenadier-Regiment 173
Awarded on:
November 5th, 1944
On the 14.09.1944 the Soviets began their breakout from the Dorpat bridgehead, with the German 87. Infanterie-Division being among the units defending against this attack. The Soviets attacked this German division with four of their own, bringing it under heavy pressure. They succeeded in triggering the collapse of the German front in the sector of Grenadier-Regiment 173, which was located near Marama.

It was at this moment that Gruppenführer Rosenheinrich would particularly distinguish himself. Taking a handful of Grenadiers, he launched a thrust into the flank of the attacking Soviets, throwing them off balance and inflicting heavy casualties in the process. With great skill Rosenheinrich was able to prevent a further advance of the Soviets in his sector of the frontline. This contributed decisively to the German ability to stabilize the overall situation, and commence an orderly withdrawal to the new Jögeva Position the next day. Rosenheinrich would receive the Knight’s Cross for his actions here.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
