On the 16.07.1944 the Soviets launched a major attack with tank support against the defensive positions of the 96. Infanterie-Division, with the focus being on Grenadier-Regiment 284. Among the defenders in this sector was Obergefreiter Lublow. In the course of the battle Lublow would prove to be an outstanding fighter, destroying at least 6 Soviet tanks with close combat weapons. This was an achievement made possible by his skill and bravery, and by doing so he made a major contribution towards the smashing of this Soviet attack. In recognition he would be decorated with one gold and one silver tank destruction badge, and later the Knight’s Cross.
