The following article (dated March 1943) describes why Feldwebel Kummer would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross…

“Feldwebel Gotthard Kummer, born on the 19.11.1908 in Grünhainichen (Gau Saxony), has particularly distinguished himself through his daring and bravery in the battles south of Lake Ladoga as a Zugführer in an East Prussian Grenadier-Regiment. In bitter close combat he threw back strong forces that had penetrated his sector of frontline. On the 11.03.1943 the Führer awarded him the Knight’s Cross.”
