During the fighting around Monte Cassino in late 1943, Leutnant Knaf and his Zug stormed the vital Hill 907, which was of decisive importance for the defense of the Vandra area. With his men he then held it to the last man, himself falling in battle at this place on the 08.12.1943. For this heroic and selfless act he would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.

Awarded posthumously.
