"On the 1st June of the YSER CANAL north of HONDSCHOOTE, P.S.M. CALVERT handled his platoon with sound common sense, thereby saving casualties to his own men and inflicting heavy loss on the enemy. After the officers of his company had been killed or wounded he was ordered to withdraw his platoon from the canal bank. He executed the withdrawal in face of the enemy without further loss. He showed a fine example of initiative. His calmness and courage under M.G. and shell fire were an example to all ranks."
