During the defensive battles in the Tschernobyl area, Unteroffizier Hofer was subordinated to the Panzergrenadier-Regiment 12 with his 3 self-propelled Pak. In this fighting he repelled all enemy armoured attacks while inflicting heavy losses. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
