At dawn on the 07.03.1943, the Soviets attacked the positions of the 5. Panzer-Division (located north of Orel) after a two hour drumfire. Supported by about 100 tanks, the focal points of the Soviet attack were at Poliki and Aschkowo. During the defensive battle that this assault initiated, machine-gunner and Obergefreiter Albert Hoffmann would repeatedly distinguish himself through his bravery. With his MG he defended against enemy attacks over a period lasting 92+ hours from a commanding position, and in doing so succeeded in preventing the Soviets from taking control of an important supply route. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
