Despite multiple fierce Soviet attacks, the Kompanie was able to repel all assaults (partially in bitter close combat) and hold its strategically important hill position under Haude’s skillful leadership. As this operation was playing out Haude died in battle on the 18.10.1943. However his actions would be recognized later with the award of the Knight’s Cross.
