Awarded for his successes as a Panzer gunner and commander. From the start of Operation Barbarossa up until the 08.01.1943 he destroyed 60 Soviet tanks, and particularly distinguished himself during an attack of his Abteilung that had the aim of closing a pocket southeast of Toropez. Here, when the attack came to a halt due to a heavy enemy AA battery, Harth emerged from cover and destroyed the enemy battery in a bitter firefight.
